What Is a Closing The Bones Ceremony?

Closing the Bones:

An Ancient Ceremony of Release and Renewal. Deep in the traditions of Ecuador, a sacred healing practice has been passed down through generations of women — and it's beautifully making its way back into the light.

And it's not just for new mothers — this ceremony offers deep healing for women at any age or stage of life. It can be especially supportive during times of change, transition, emotional tiredness, or when you simply feel the need to come back to yourself.

Traditionally, a new mother would receive her first Closing the Bones treatment within hours of giving birth, then several more times across the first 40 days postpartum. Why so soon? Because this is when the body's energy channels — opened wide by pregnancy and birth — are most ready to be gently sealed. The sooner this happens, the more vitality and strength the mother retains. Many cultures around the world hold similar postnatal traditions, often using fabric or shawls to wrap and support the healing body.

What Happens During a Ceremony

Using a rebozo — a traditional Mexican shawl — I work gently along the back of the body, applying soft, rhythmic tugs that trace the bladder meridian, an energy channel closely tied to our nervous system.

This meridian plays a powerful role in how we process stress. Stimulating it can:

  • Boost the immune system

  • Release deeply stored emotional memory

  • Calm an overactive nervous system

  • Ease feelings of fear, frustration, and anger that arise when this energy is out of balance

  • Balance hormones

In our fast-paced modern lives, our nervous systems are so often stuck in overdrive. This ceremony works to activate the parasympathetic nervous system — our body's natural "rest and restore" state — gently switching off the fight-or-flight response and creating space for deep calm.

The Experience

Each ceremony is a slow, nourishing 2, 3 or 4 hours, combining rebozo wrapping with hands-on oil massage — a true cocoon of care where you're invited to soften, release, and simply be held.

2 hours — £100

3 hours — £140 (with extended shawl work)

4 hours — £185 ( everything from the 2 and 3 hours, plus extra Mexican techniques on head, arms and legs)

Every session closes with a full-body wrap in the rebozos, a time of stillness and integration to seal in the healing.

Ready to Give Back to Yourself?

If this resonates with you, I'd love to hold this space for you.

With love
